Collection: Sport

Olympics, ski seasons, regattas, race meetings, tournaments. Posters made to put a date on a wall and a colour on a season. Sport has always been a poster business. Match dates, fixture lists, ticket promotions, civic pride and national bids printed by the thousand and replaced before the next event.

The collection spans the great sporting design eras. The 1936 Berlin Olympics, where Werner Würbel and Franz Würbel made propaganda look like sport. Otl Aicher's pictograms for the 1972 Munich Olympics, still the most influential sport graphics ever made. The Mexico 1968 Lance Wyman identity. Verbier, Chamonix, St Moritz and the golden age of Alpine ski poster art by Carlo Pellegrini, Martin Peikert, Alex Diggelmann. Tour de France posters, Wimbledon programmes, vintage boxing bills, Henley Regatta and the British country sporting tradition.

These were timed objects. The fixture was on Saturday and the poster was paste-up on Tuesday. Most went in the bin on Sunday night.
