A coachman in a white coat, whip in hand, stares in comic dismay as a gentleman in a top hat cycles past with a cigar.

Eugène Ogé (1861 to 1936) designed the poster, and Imprimerie Charles Verneau lithographed it at 114 Rue Oberkampf, Paris, around 1897. American bicycle brands had been flooding European markets since 1896, and Snell was one of the beneficiaries. Ogé began as an apprentice to the printer Charles Verneau.

On the poster

A white-haired gentleman in black evening dress and a top hat rides a Snell safety bicycle along a Paris boulevard. To his left the stout coachman, in a white coat, looks on. The Paris skyline runs across the middle ground in flat amber silhouette: a domed pavilion, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower. Ogé uses two colours only, black and amber-orange on cream.

Each print begins with historic artwork, carefully restored using the latest digital tools and restoration techniques. Damage is addressed, colours refined and details recovered, while respecting the original composition, lettering and character.

The result? All the charm of the original, without having to live with its unfortunate accidents.

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
