A white-haired gentleman in black evening dress and top hat rides a Snell safety bicycle along a Paris boulevard, a cigar raised casually to his lips. To his left, a stout figure in a white coachman's coat stares in comic dismay, whip in hand. The Paris skyline spreads across the middle ground in flat amber silhouette: a domed pavilion, the Arc de Triomphe, and the just-completed Eiffel Tower. Ogé renders the scene in two colours only, black and amber-orange against cream, yet the caricature draftsmanship is exact enough to carry the social joke without a word of explanation.

Designed by Eugène Ogé (1861–1936) and lithographed by Imprimerie Charles Verneau at 114 Rue Oberkampf, Paris, around 1897. The timing is deliberate: American bicycle brands had been flooding European markets from 1896, and Snell, with a showroom at 21 Rue Martel, was one of the beneficiaries. Ogé, who trained at the Verneau workshop alongside Steinlen and Willette, was praised by critic Ernest Maindron as 'un lithographe de premier ordre.' The composition is catalogued as Ogé reference No. 242.

The poster belongs to the high point of the Belle Epoque cycling boom, when the safety bicycle was reshaping Paris street life and the city's poster artists were quick to chronicle the social friction it caused. Ogé's choice of the coachman as foil is apt: horse-drawn traffic and the bicycle existed in uneasy competition on Haussmann's boulevards through the late 1890s. The unruffled cyclist, formally dressed, unhurried, superior, is the poster's argument for the new technology.

Reproduced from archival sources as a fine art print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper with pigment-based inks. Well suited to anyone with an interest in fin-de-siècle French poster design, the social history of cycling, or the caricature tradition that runs from Daumier to the Belle Epoque affichistes.
