A woman in a full-length salmon-pink dress rides a Fernand Clément bicycle across a deep cobalt night sky, her right arm extended to carry a glowing brass lantern. A yellow crescent moon occupies the upper right quadrant; white stars scatter the background. Flowing cream cursive type spells out 'Fernand Clément & Cie' at the top; black serif text below identifies the factory at 130, rue du Bois, Levallois-Perret. PAL's brushscript signature sits in the lower left.

Designed in 1894 by Jean de Paleologue, a Romanian-born illustrator working in Paris who signed his work PAL. Paleologue (1855–1942) was one of the most prolific poster artists of the French Belle Époque cycling boom, producing a series of bicycle commissions that placed elegantly dressed women at their centre. The Fernand Clément & Cie company operated from Levallois-Perret, a suburb that housed several of France's leading cycle manufacturers during the 1890s, a decade when commissioning a PAL lithograph was standard competitive practice among ambitious bicycle brands.

The composition is spare by the standards of the era: the night sky carries the mood, the lantern supplies the only narrative detail, and the crescent moon gives the design its scale. Where rival cycle posters showed racers and mountain passes, PAL's Fernand Clément placed his rider in a starlit void, the bicycle itself almost incidental to the nocturnal atmosphere. Original examples have sold at auction above ten thousand dollars, reflecting the poster's standing in collections of Belle Époque commercial art.

Reproduced from an archival source on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper. A considered choice for anyone interested in 1890s French graphic design, the visual history of cycling, or Belle Époque poster art.
