A courtier in a green mantle holds his bottle out against a sky of slate blue and salmon. Leonetto Cappiello designed the poster in 1922 for Veuve Amiot, the Loire Valley sparkling wine house, for its Crémant du Roi. Cappiello (1875 to 1942) had arrived in Paris from Livorno in 1898 and worked with the Devambez publishing house after the First World War.
On the poster
A rotund courtier in white breeches, a green mantle and a scarlet diagonal sash stands against a ground that fades from slate blue to warm salmon. His wide-brimmed hat carries a sweep of dark feathers and a gold eight-pointed medallion sits at his waist. In one white-gloved hand he holds a dark bottle with a plain label turned toward the viewer. His eyes are half-closed and he leans slightly back.
