French customers gave the chocolate a name of their own: le chocolat au cheval rouge, the red-horse chocolate. Leonetto Cappiello (1875 to 1942) designed the poster in 1903 for the Swiss company Chocolat Klaus. It was printed in Paris by Imp. P. Vercasson & Cie. The image decorated the company's chocolate bars until around 2000.
On the poster
A blonde woman in a flowing green dress and tall feathered hat grips blue reins as her red-orange horse rears against a flat black ground. No product appears. Large yellow letters below read "CHOCOLAT KLAUS". The lithograph used five colours: red, chrome yellow, green, cornflower blue and black.
