A turbaned Renaissance-costumed figure in a cobalt blue slashed doublet leans forward, extending a bottle of Curaçao Galland and a white ceramic jug toward the viewer. His fleshy caricatured face, set against a background graduating from deep mahogany to near-black, is wholly Cappiello in register: bold, good-humoured, impossible to ignore at pace. The yellow headline 'CURACAO GALLAND' spans the width of the composition; 'de VIENNE / ISERE', 'MAISON FONDEE EN 1821', and 'HORS CONCOURS / PARIS 1900' appear below, the last noting the brand's distinction at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.
Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) designed this lithograph in 1911 for Galland Reveu, a curaçao producer based in Vienne, in the Isère department of southeastern France. The house had been founded in 1821, giving the brand ninety years of history by the time Cappiello illustrated it. The poster was printed by Établissements Vercasson, Paris, the publisher with whom Cappiello signed his first poster contract in 1900. The single bold figure isolated against a dark ground is one of Cappiello's defining compositional strategies: a device he refined across more than 530 posters to cut through the visual noise of the Paris boulevards.
The costume deserves a note. The wide-brimmed hat, slashed doublet, puffed sleeves and white cuff ruffs are all markers of sixteenth-century French court dress, evoking a François I aesthetic. Cappiello chose them to lend a provincial liqueur brand the weight of deep heritage, a common tactic in Belle Époque advertising where antiquity equalled trustworthiness.
This archival reproduction is produced on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper, without optical brighteners, holding the depth of the original dark ground and the warmth of the cadmium yellow type. It belongs in any collection of Cappiello's affiche work, alongside prints from the Vercasson years.
