The SS Rotterdam appears to glide through a stylized globe showing the transition from day to night. The ship cuts boldly across the composition against deep blue gradients and starlit skies, while the French tagline 'L'avenir...DES AUJOURD'HUI!' depicts the optimism of late 1950s transatlantic travel.
Designed by Dutch artist Eppo Doeve in 1959 for Holland America Line's promotion of their flagship SS Rotterdam. Born in the Dutch East Indies in 1907, Doeve became known for his advertising illustrations and maritime posters that depicted the glamour of ocean travel's final golden age. His work for Holland America Line represents some of the finest commercial poster art of the period.
The poster represents Holland America Line at the height of their transatlantic service, when the SS Rotterdam was the pride of the Dutch merchant fleet. The composition balances technical precision with mid-century optimism, typical of Doeve's commercial work for major European shipping lines.
Archival print reproduced from the original 1959 lithograph using pigment-based inks on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper.
