A smiling orange in a silver Roman gladiator helmet draws twin straws from a glass of Romano, the eponymous bottle standing alongside on a tray. The whole composition is set against a flat cobalt blue ground, the amber and golden-yellow palette delivering the high contrast that French commercial lithographers favoured in the early interwar years.

Designed d'après Deram and printed by Imp. Gion & Freard of Paris for the Grande Vermoutherie Hémard of Montreuil-Seine, this poster dates to the early 1920s. Ariste Hémard had run his distillery since 1886; the firm merged with Pernod in 1926, placing this design in the first half of the decade. The anthropomorphised citrus mascot, helmeted, grinning, happily self-serving, belongs to the tradition of character-led French advertising that Cappiello had established in the preceding decade, here rendered with a Roman-soldier conceit that plays on the brand name.

The 'd'après Deram' notation on the original lithograph identifies the artist as Deram, a Parisian commercial poster designer of the period. Gion & Freard, the printing house credited below, were active Paris lithographers of the 1910s–1920s, their work appearing on a range of French advertising affiches of the era.

Reproduced as a fine art archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper, with pigment-based inks that preserve the cobalt, amber, and green palette without optical brighteners.
