A delivery man strides out of the sea with an oyster basket on his head, a large orange-red fish under his arm and a steaming chafing dish raised aloft. Small sailboats recede into the blue-grey water behind him; his feet throw up white surf. The composition is rendered in the flat, high-contrast graphic language of late-1920s French commercial lithography: bold black ground, yellow-gold hand-lettered display type, and a silhouetted central figure designed to read instantly at poster scale.
Designed by Pierre Falize (1875–1953) for Prunier, the Parisian seafood and shellfish house founded in 1872. Prunier pioneered home delivery of fresh fish and oysters in Paris, and this poster advertised that service with characteristic wit: 'Livre Vite et Bien' (Delivers Fast and Well), with the delivery man not driving a cart but simply walking straight out of the ocean. Falize was the youngest son of the noted goldsmith and Arts Décoratifs figure Lucien Falize, and brought the same applied-design rigour to commercial poster work. The composition was printed by Daudé Frères, Paris, and appears in major auction records from c.1928 through the 1930s.
Reproduced from an archival source as a fine art print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper with pigment-based inks. The matte surface suits the flat graphic character of the original lithography, holding the deep blacks and the luminous yellow-gold type without glare.
