The clouds around the airman carry a faint suggestion of wings.
Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer designed the poster in 1944. The United States War Department issued it and Brown and Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota published it. Schlaikjer had been appointed official War Department artist in 1942, and had trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. A copy is held by the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth.
On the poster
An aviator in a brown leather bomber jacket stands among the clouds at near-mythological scale, a bomb cradled under one arm and a flight helmet in the other hand. Below him, silhouettes of heavy bombers move in loose formation through the cumulus. Spaced white capitals read "O'ER THE RAMPARTS WE WATCH." A navy band carries the USAAF winged-star roundel, and the footer reads "UNITED STATES ARMY AIR FORCES" in gold.
