A small child strides away from the viewer, a hoe in one hand and a spade in the other.
The design is adapted from a prize-winning one by Mary Tunbridge. The British Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries first issued it in 1941, printed for H.M. Stationery Office by H. Manly and Son Ltd. The Dig for Victory campaign had launched in October 1939, calling on households across Britain to turn every available plot of land over to growing food.
On the poster
A small child, seen entirely from behind, strides across a cream ground with a long-handled hoe in one hand and a D-handled spade in the other. The figure wears a white sun hat, white shirt and shorts, with warm orange-tan legs, against a soft circular blue vignette. Bold black slab capitals read "DIG" and "FOR" on either side. Thick red capitals below spell "VICTORY".
