A woman in a long golden gown, white feather boa and red rose, turns from four suitors who crowd the black background behind her, their faces rendered in the bold caricature of the French theatrical poster tradition. The title 'La Veuve Joyeuse' is set in cadmium-red block capitals at lower left, the dense lettering anchoring a composition built entirely on the contrast between the luminous yellow of the gown and the near-black ground.
Franz Lehár's operetta, known in German as Die lustige Witwe, reached Paris on 28 April 1909 at the Théâtre Apollo, retitled La Veuve Joyeuse with a French adaptation by Robert de Flers and Gaston de Caillavet. The production ran for 186 performances. Large-format lithographs produced for Belle Époque theatre productions in Paris were typically commissioned from the leading poster artists of the day, among them Jules-Alexandre Grün, whose work for Paris cabarets and music halls from 1892 onward is characterised by the same bold figure-against-dark-ground construction visible here. A partially legible cursive signature appears at lower right; attribution has not been confirmed from this scan alone.
The design sits within the Belle Époque poster tradition that produced some of the most recognised French graphic art of the early twentieth century: large figures, saturated colour, flat graphic planes, and typography integrated as a compositional element rather than an afterthought.
Reproduced as an archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper, using pigment-based inks. The natural white, OBA-free stock preserves the warmth of the original colour palette.
