La Veuve Joyeuse 1909

1909

Four suitors crowd the black ground behind her, and she is turning away from all of them. The poster advertises Franz Lehár's operetta, known in German as Die lustige Witwe. It reached Paris on 28 April 1909 at the Théâtre Apollo as La Veuve Joyeuse, in a French adaptation by Robert de Flers and Gaston de Caillavet. The production ran for 186 performances.

On the poster

A woman in a long golden gown, a white feather boa and a red rose stands against a near-black ground. The suitors behind her are drawn in bold caricature. The title "La Veuve Joyeuse" is set in cadmium-red block capitals at lower left. The yellow of the gown is the brightest thing on the sheet.
