A young woman in a long forest-green dress stands at the seashore, tilting a bottle of La Mouette Anis Supérieur into a tall stemmed glass. To her right, a great herring gull holds the frame in balance: wings spread, it skims in over rolling green-tipped waves. Bold red slab-serif type across the top names the brand; golden italic below declares 'Anis Supérieur'; at the foot, 'EN VENTE ICI' closes the design in the same cadmium red. The colour range, coastal blue, forest green, warm gold, and white foam, sits within the lithographic palette of pre-war French commercial printing.
The poster was produced for Etablissements Marcel Foucras, distillers at the Grande Distillerie du Tarn in Carmaux, a market town in the Tarn department of southern France. The trademark was registered on 1 May 1915, the date the poster itself records, placing this among the first advertising material issued for the brand. The design is attributed to Raoul Vion, a French illustrator and poster designer of the 1910s–1930s, known primarily for his work in the satirical press and for his association with the Société des Humoristes.
The figure-plus-mascot-animal formula was well-established in French aperitif advertising: the seagull ('la mouette') serves as both brand identifier and compositional counterweight to the woman's downward gaze, the two figures anchoring either side of a coastal horizon. The flat colour areas and chromolithographic letterforms place the design firmly in the Belle Époque commercial tradition.
Reproduced as a fine art archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper. A natural fit for anyone interested in early twentieth-century French beverage advertising or Belle Époque commercial art.
