The man on the path has a clay pipe in his teeth, a basket of potatoes in one hand, and a broad grin. Peter Fraser designed this poster as part of the Dig for Victory campaign. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries launched the campaign in 1939.

By 1943 the number of allotments in Britain had roughly doubled to 1.4 million.

On the poster

A grinning allotment worker walks toward the viewer along a sandy path with a garden fork over his shoulder, cabbages and carrots under one arm and a wicker basket of potatoes in the other hand. Behind him, flat allotment plots recede to the horizon, where more figures are at work. The sky is pale blue. Solid red capitals across the top read "DIG ON FOR VICTORY".

Paper and print details

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
