The eagle has its beak open mid-cry and a roll of war bond certificates in its talons. Dean Cornwell designed it for the US Treasury Department's War Finance Division in 1945, and the US Government Printing Office printed it (printed reference 1945-O-666315, WFD 53A). It promoted the Victory Loan drive at the end of the Second World War.

Cornwell had been president of the Society of Illustrators from 1922 to 1926.

On the poster

A bald eagle spreads its wings across the full height of the sheet, talons gripping a rolled stack of US war bond certificates. The plumage is dark brown edged with white light, the beak yellow, and spotlight beams radiate behind the body. Three broad diagonal bands, navy above, cream at centre and crimson below, carry scattered five-pointed stars. The headline in white italic type begins "Victory" and ends "now you can invest in it!" A solid navy banner across the foot states "VICTORY LOAN" in heavy slab-serif capitals.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
