Jules Chéret (1836 to 1932) designed this chromolithograph in 1892 for the Théâtre National de l'Opéra, Paris, as part of the Carnaval season series. Imprimerie Chaix (Ateliers Chéret) at 20 rue Bergère printed it. Chéret was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1890.
On the poster
A woman in a gold ball gown and black eye mask holds a feather fan at the centre, her auburn curls and red-lipped half-smile at the heart of the sheet. Behind her a harlequin in a dark navy suit throws his arms wide, grey-faced and exuberant. A second masked figure hovers at the upper edge, and pink roses fall at the lower corners. The background is a loose wash of pale blue-grey.
At the foot, bold blackletter gives the date in French: Thursday 24 March, the Fourth Masked Ball.
