A woman walks a diagonal tightrope, and the lettering curves along with her.
Jules Chéret (1836 to 1932) lithographed La Danseuse de Corde in 1891 at his Ateliers Chaix press on rue Bergère in Paris, to advertise a pantomime at the Nouveau Théâtre on rue Blanche. Chéret had received the Legion of Honour in 1890, the year before.
On the poster
A red-haired performer in a dark navy costume walks the tightrope, amber hair streaming behind her and a balancing pole in her left hand. Cadmium red lettering curves around her figure: "La Danseuse de Corde" (The Tightrope Dancer). "NOUVEAU THEATRE" (New Theatre) sits in bold navy at the upper right. The typography is drawn into her movement instead of sitting above the figure.
