A fireman puts out his own cough with a hose. Jean Carlu (1900 to 1997) designed the poster around 1950. His career included an extended period in the United States. He had trained as an architect. He lost his right hand in a road accident and turned to poster art. The printer was De Plas, Paris.

On the poster

A blue-uniformed fireman trains a brass hose nozzle into his open mouth, steam rising. The hose spirals in brown loops at his feet. At upper left are the product bottle and a silver spoon, and at mid-left the slogan "éteint la toux" (puts out the cough) sits in a yellow panel. Above it all, "LE SIROP DES VOSGES" is set in bold condensed charcoal type, with "CAZÉ" below.

The ground is stark white.

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
