Soviet Vostok 1961

Soviet Vostok 1961

Boris Feokistovich Berezovsky1961

The poster marks Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight in the Vostok 1 capsule on 12 April 1961. Boris Feoktistovich Berezovsky (1910 to 1977) is credited as the designer.

On the poster

A worker in white overalls stands arms-wide on top of the Vostok rocket, with a vast red Soviet flag bearing the hammer-and-sickle state emblem filling the upper field behind him. White speed-lines radiate across a golden-yellow ground. At lower left a sun-burst cartouche marks the date "12 АПРЕЛЯ 1961". To the right, four lines of bold Cyrillic: "К ПЛАНЕТАМ / ЧЕЛОВЕКУ / ПУТЬ / ОТКРЫТ!" (The way to the planets is open to mankind!).

Our restoration process

History has wrinkles. We have standards.

A century or two can be unkind to a poster. Folds, tears, stains, fading and the occasional indignity of terrible storage.

Each print begins with historic artwork, carefully restored using the latest digital tools and restoration techniques. Damage is addressed, colours refined and details recovered, while respecting the original composition, lettering and character.

The result? All the charm of the original, without having to live with its unfortunate accidents.

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
