Soviet Ukrainian Cooperative 1920s

Balavanis1920s

Knyhospilka, the All-Ukrainian cooperative publishing house, grew from 26 titles in 1923 to 534 in 1926 to 1927. It published almost entirely in Ukrainian and was abolished by the Soviet authorities in 1931. This cooperative poster, credited to Balavanis, dates from the 1920s and carries its message in Ukrainian.

On the poster

A black silhouette of Lenin in profile sits inside a cadmium red five-pointed star, encircled by golden wheat sheaves, in the upper half of the sheet. Below, a cream panel carries a Lenin quotation in bold red Ukrainian Cyrillic block capitals. It translates as "In our time, the public social system which we are above all obliged to support is the cooperative system." A broad diagonal red banner across the lower third carries the single word "КООПЕРАТИВНИЙ" (Cooperative) in white.

The ground alternates between diagonal bands of red and black.

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
