The poster was designed in 1977 for the 60th anniversary of the October Revolution. Valentin Petrovich Viktorov (1909 to 1981) designed it. He worked as a poster artist from the 1930s until his death in 1981, including for Iskusstvo and Izobrazitelnoe Iskusstvo.

On the poster

A polished silver Sputnik-1 satellite, a hammer-and-sickle emblem on its hull, climbs a diagonal beam of white light across a deep navy sky. Below, the cruiser Aurora sits in grey silhouette against a cadmium orange-red horizon, its triple funnels and gun turrets clear, so that ship and satellite share one vertical axis. Red orbital lines arc across the sheet. At lower right, amber-gold lettering is transliterated as "Strana Oktyabrya, Rodina Kosmonavtiki" (The country of October is the birthplace of cosmonautics).

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
