Valentin Petrovich Viktorov1961

Valentin Petrovich Viktorov (1909 to 1981) designed this poster in 1961, after Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight in April of that year. Viktorov had produced posters for Izogiz and Izobrazitel'noe Iskusstvo since the 1930s. Poster House in New York holds a copy of this poster.

On the poster

A Soviet rocket with an orange hammer and sickle on its nose cone climbs toward a vast blue sphere, against a roiling sky of burnt orange and deep maroon. White light-streaks cross the background. At the lower right, three lines of bold teal-green Cyrillic slab-serif: "ПОКОРИТЕЛЯМ / ВСЕЛЕННОЙ / СЛАВА!" (Glory to the Conquerors of the Universe).

Our restoration process

History has wrinkles. We have standards.

A century or two can be unkind to a poster. Folds, tears, stains, fading and the occasional indignity of terrible storage.

Each print begins with historic artwork, carefully restored using the latest digital tools and restoration techniques. Damage is addressed, colours refined and details recovered, while respecting the original composition, lettering and character.

The result? All the charm of the original, without having to live with its unfortunate accidents.

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
