Moscow's Monument to the Conquerors of Space is a 107 metre titanium spire near the VDNKh, unveiled in 1964. The gold obelisk and rocket on this poster recall its form. Valentin Petrovich Viktorov (1909 to 1981) designed the poster. He produced political and civic posters from the 1930s for the Soviet state publishers Iskusstvo, Izogiz and Izobrazitelnoe Iskusstvo. The design is dated to about 1968.
On the poster
A gold tapered obelisk rises from a band of warm orange, capped by a three-finned rocket narrowing to a white point. Behind it a large flat red hammer and sickle fills the upper field, against a mauve-purple sky. Two lines of bold yellow Cyrillic at the foot read "К НОВЫМ ВЫСОТАМ В НАУКЕ И ТРУДЕ!" (To new heights in science and labour).
