Soviet Propaganda Poster 1987

The book the students are reading is labelled "Программа КПСС" (CPSU Programme).

The 1961 Third Programme set out Soviet society's goals for "building communism". N. Babin and I. Ovasapov designed the poster, which is dated 1987. It belongs to the ideological education campaigns of the late Soviet period.

Babin and Ovasapov also worked together on poster sets published by Plakat.

On the poster

A large flat red silhouette of Lenin in left-facing profile fills the upper half of the cream sheet, flanked by rows of library book spines in the same saturated red. In the foreground a bespectacled young man and a young woman read from a book labelled "Программа КПСС", while a student behind them takes notes at a desk. Three stacked volumes at lower left are lettered "Ленин", "История КПСС" and "Маркс".

Across a red band at the top, in bold white block capitals: "Учиться коммунизму!" (Study Communism!). Cadmium red and cream frame the black and grey figures.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
