Cosmonautics Day commemorates Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight aboard Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961. This poster was issued for the holiday and is dated 1973. Valentin Petrovich Viktorov (1909 to 1981) designed it. He worked as a poster artist from the 1930s until his death in 1981, mainly for the publishing houses Iskusstvo, Izogiz and Izobrazitel'noe Iskusstvo.
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds a copy of this design.
On the poster
Gagarin looks directly out from inside a sealed white helmet marked CCCP, his face in warm tones. Behind him a large teal Earth fills the centre, with an orbital arc tracing the path of Vostok 1 across it. To the right a dark maroon and graphite rocket rises the full height of the sheet, carrying an orange hammer-and-sickle emblem near the apex and the numerals "12 IV 1961" in tall cream-gold type.
In the upper left, two lines of bold mint-green Cyrillic: "ДЕНЬ КОСМОНАВТИКИ" / "СССР" (Cosmonautics Day, USSR).
