A magic poster from the Great Western Printing Company of St. Louis, made around 1900 and carrying printer's mark No. 2044. The McCord Stewart Museum holds an impression (accession M2014.128.472).
On the poster
A black-coated magician stands centre stage, smiling, one arm out with a white cloth, the other presenting a gold bowl. A large red-skinned devil with horns looms behind him. At his left a skull rests on a crimson-draped table beside a white dove in flight. Three smaller vignettes of the same performer circle him: pulling a rabbit from a top hat, holding a playing-card aloft, and standing in formal evening dress.
Ribbon streamers and scattered playing cards fill the gaps. On the right a yellow-clothed table holds a clock-face scientific balance and a flowering pink plant.
