Kellar the Great Magician 1899

1899

Two small imps sit on the magician, one at his ear and one on his lapel, and he looks down, composed and still. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati printed the poster in 1899 as part of a series of Kellar portrait lithographs issued across the decade. Harry Kellar was known as the Dean of American Magicians and retired in 1908.

The copyright imprint is legible at the lower right.

On the poster

A bald man in black evening dress looks down against a near-black navy ground. A crimson imp on his right shoulder leans in with its mouth close to his ear. A second imp crouches on his left lapel, facing outward with wide green eyes. "KELLAR" fills the lower third in cream letters edged with red and dark shadow. Below it, in smaller capitals: "the GREAT MAGICIAN."
