A small red devil with bat wings perches on a mentalist's shoulder and leans in to whisper. Standard Show Printers of Saint Paul, Minnesota lithographed the poster, and it dates to between 1920 and 1930. The mentalist is C.A. George Newmann, a Minnesotan born Christian Andrew George Naeseth. He was a professional mentalist and hypnotist from 1896.
On the poster
Newmann's large profile fills the navy ground, his face drawn in flat cream white. Above it, "SOIREES FANTASTIQUES" [Fantastic evenings] is set in bold red slab-serif capitals. Below, the performer's name flows in red brush-script over a theatrical underline flourish. The printer imprint "STANDARD ST. PAUL" sits in the lower right corner.
