Kellar Self Decapitation 1898

The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York produced the poster in 1898 to advertise Harry Kellar's Self Decapitation illusion. Kellar, born Heinrich Keller in Erie, Pennsylvania, was known as the Dean of American Magicians. He stayed at the top of American stage magic until his retirement in 1908, when he publicly handed his mantle to Howard Thurston. The poster belongs to a documented series of Kellar advertising lithographs that runs from the 1890s into the early 1900s.

On the poster

The man in the chair holds his own severed head at arm's length, and the head also floats in a radiant blue halo above his body. The stage floor is amber and the ground deep navy. The bold white headline "KELLAR" is shadowed in red-orange.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
