A red devil in a jester's pointed cap leans over a magician who is reading a book and paying him no attention. The poster was made for Herrmann the Great, the billing of the French-born illusionist Alexander Herrmann. After Alexander Herrmann's death, his nephew Leon Herrmann joined Adelaide Herrmann's act the following January.
On the poster
The mustachioed magician stands at a gothic lectern in a frock coat and white cravat, wand raised and skull-mounted scales in one hand. Below, a green imp crouches over an open grimoire spread with astronomical diagrams. An owl perches on the lectern beside a row of alchemical vessels, and a terrestrial globe stands in the right foreground. The setting is a dark stone interior in bold, high-contrast colour.
