Howard Thurston gave Harry August Jansen the stage name Dante in 1922. Jansen was born in Copenhagen and raised in Minnesota. In 1925 Thurston became co-owner of Dante the Magician Inc., and Dante went on to tour the world with a company of 25 to 40 performers. In 1942 he appeared as himself in the Laurel and Hardy film A-Haunting We Will Go.
On the poster
Devils, geishas, turbaned assistants, a sphinx and a skeleton cluster fill a cobalt-blue sheet. At lower left a red-skinned devil leers over a hand of playing cards. Across the centre, costumed performers crowd before an Egyptian backdrop. At right Jansen looks out in three-quarter portrait, goateed, and "DANTE" blazes in white shadowed block lettering above a golden moon-disc. The yellow billing panel reads: "Dante and His Own Big American Company, Presenting the World's Greatest Mystery Spectacle."
