Dante looks straight out of the sheet with a sardonic half-smile, and a small red imp sits on his shoulder.
Adolph Friedländer's press in Hamburg printed the poster (printer's number 8952), by which time the press was run by Friedländer's sons. Dante was Harry August Jansen, born in Copenhagen, who toured the world with his own company after years with Howard Thurston. "Mystery Review" was the billing on this poster, issued well before his Sim Sala Bim revue reached Broadway in 1940.
On the poster
A close portrait of Dante fills the sheet from edge to edge. The small red winged imp perches against an olive-green ground. "DANTE" runs in large cream and yellow outlined block letters across a deep cobalt blue diagonal band, with "MYSTERY REVIEW" in yellow capitals beneath it. The colour field splits between crimson on the left and olive-green on the right.
