Father Time, gold-skinned and winged, holds a pocket watch over his head, with an hourglass in the clouds at his feet. Leonetto Cappiello (1875 to 1942) designed the lithograph in 1911 for the Swiss watchmaker Longines. Cappiello had been refining the bold-figure-on-black technique since signing with the Paris printer Vercasson in 1900. It was reprinted in more than one format, and the BnF records an eleventh edition dated 1927.
The Bibliothèque nationale de France holds two sizes.
On the poster
A gold-skinned winged figure, both arms raised, holds a gilded pocket watch against an unbroken black ground. Blue clouds mass at his feet, with a small hourglass among them. The watch face carries the Longines name in hand-lettered script. Below, "LONGINES" is set in large sage-green serif capitals, with "CHEZ LES BONS HORLOGERS" (at the good watchmakers) in orange beneath. Cappiello's signature sits at the lower left.
