Brunswick Billiards 1895

A cherub hovers over the billiard table and gestures toward the pair: a woman in a white evening dress, who leans low with her cue, and a man who watches. Noctaner designed the poster around 1895 for Brunswick-Balke-Collender's Paris showroom at 2 Rue de Sèze, to promote the company's Monarch cushion tables to French buyers. Brunswick-Balke-Collender was formed in 1884.

On the poster

The table is green-baize, and the mustachioed man in black tie holds his own cue. The ground is black, which throws the figures into sharp relief. A gold Art Nouveau border of whiplash tendrils and foliate scrolls runs around the whole sheet. At the top, bold red-orange lettering reads "les Premiers Billards du Monde" [the world's finest billiards].

Each print begins with historic artwork, carefully restored using the latest digital tools and restoration techniques. Damage is addressed, colours refined and details recovered, while respecting the original composition, lettering and character.

The result? All the charm of the original, without having to live with its unfortunate accidents.

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
