M. Cochard1930s

The roulette wheel is made of broad black brush strokes, with red marks for the pockets. M. Cochard designed the poster to advertise the Hôtel Aletti and its Casino Municipal. Paris architects Auguste Bluysen and Joachim Richard completed the hotel in 1930, the centenary year of French rule in Algeria. Cochard's signature sits in the lower right.

On the poster

A roulette wheel drawn in broad black strokes fills the centre of the sheet. On the right a man appears as a near-black silhouette in evening dress. In front of him a woman in red leans across the wheel, red flowers at her waist. Sage green shadow planes push both figures forward against a warm cream ground. "ROULETTE" runs in heavy crimson display type across the lower third, with a red banner beneath reading "BACCARA + BOULE".

The upper left carries "ALGER / ALETTI / CASINO MUNICIPAL" in crimson and black.
