Somebody has planted a notice board in the middle of an infantry column, and it says the space is reserved. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee published the poster in London in February 1915 as PRC Poster No. 35, printed by the Haycock-Cadle Company of Camberwell. The committee commissioned more than one hundred poster designs before the move to conscription in 1916.

None of the Imperial War Museum, the Library of Congress or the Australian War Memorial records an artist. Designer unknown.

On the poster

A long column of British infantrymen in khaki service dress stands at attention, stretching in tight perspective across a deep teal-green ground. Planted in the middle of the column is a white notice board with red lettering: "This Space Is Reserved For A Fit Man." The headline above, in bold white condensed capitals, reads "There Is Still A Place In The Line For You." At the foot, in flowing white script: "Will You Fill It?"

Paper and print details

Good art deserves good paper.

Each poster is printed to order using professional giclée printing techniques and archival pigment inks on 200gsm enhanced matte fine art paper.

The natural white, smooth matte finish reduces glare while bringing out rich colours and crisp detail. The inks are designed for excellent lightfastness, helping the artwork retain its colour for years to come.
