The Statue of Liberty rises straight out of the Atlantic, torch high above the waves, against a golden sunset. Georges Goursat (1863 to 1934), who worked as Sem, made this war bond poster in 1917. That was the year the United States entered the war. Sem was a caricaturist as well as a poster artist.
On the poster
The French lettering reads "Pour la Liberté du Monde, Souscrivez à l'Emprunt National" (For the Liberty of the World, Subscribe to the National Loan). Liberty rises from the sea, and the sunset sky is gold.
