A Soviet submarine conning tower cuts through stylised teal waters, its wake trailing behind as it heads toward the horizon. Above, the USSR letters frame a bold yellow hammer and sickle within a star, scattered against a sage green sky dotted with smaller stars.
Commissioned by the JSU (Juventudes Socialistas Unificadas) in 1937, this poster by Jos Bardasano rallied Spanish Republicans to support the Soviet ship Komsomol. The submarine had become a symbol of USSR solidarity with Republican Spain during the Civil War, carrying military aid through the Mediterranean blockade. Bardasano designed this as part of a national fundraising campaign after the original Komsomol was reportedly sunk by Italian forces.
Jos Bardasano (1910-1979) emerged as one of Spain's most influential war poster artists, founding the La Gallofa workshop as part of the JSU's propaganda efforts. His bold graphic style, with its simplified forms and saturated colour palette, exemplified Spanish Civil War poster art at its most direct and urgent.
Reproduced as an archival print on museum-grade paper, this poster appeals to collectors of Spanish Civil War history, Soviet propaganda art, and those drawn to the stark visual language of 1930s political graphics.
