A smiling young woman in a white ruffled blouse holds a blue wicker tray laden with two green Calissano Asti bottles and overflowing clusters of golden-green grapes. The background darkens from olive-green to near-black at the base, where ASTI and CALISSANO are rendered in large rounded yellow capitals. A crimson bonnet sash and collar bow are the sole warm accents against a cool, considered palette.

Designed by Achille Lucien Mauzan and printed by MAGA of Paris and Milan, the creation date printed in the poster's lower margin reads Décembre 1922, placing it squarely in Mauzan's most productive Italian period, when he was working directly with the Maga printing house of Giovanni Magagnoli. Calissano was an established Piedmontese producer with roots in the Alba wine country going back to the late nineteenth century; by the early 1920s the brand was exporting its Asti spumante to France, as the 'Importé d'Italie' note in the margin confirms. The early 1920s was the period when, as art historian records note, Mauzan's style was absorbing the influence of cubism and Art Deco while retaining his characteristic warmth of figure. The server here is unhurried and at ease: the grapes and bottles simply look like the natural accompaniment to good company.

Reproduced from the 1922 lithographic design on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper using pigment-based archival inks. The flat modelling of the figure and the confident hand-lettered typography render with particular fidelity on a matte surface, preserving the warmth of the original stone lithography.

A fitting choice for anyone interested in Italian advertising design of the 1920s, Piedmontese wine culture, or the graphic work of Achille Mauzan.
