A weathered merchant marine sailor grips the ship's wheel with calloused hands, his blue eyes fixed on the horizon. The yellow background blazes behind him, while bold red lettering declares urgent words that called experienced seamen to serve in the final push of World War II.

Designed by Martha Sawyers in 1944 for the US War Shipping Administration, this recruitment poster depicted the gritty determination of America's maritime workforce. Sawyers, a Texas-born illustrator and war correspondent, painted the merchant marine with unflinching realism, the brown leather jacket worn smooth by salt spray, the blue turtleneck that speaks of North Atlantic crossings.

The composition distills wartime urgency into a single moment: one man, one wheel, one mission. Sawyers understood that victory required bodies as much as battleships, and her poster made the merchant marine's sacrifice visible to a nation focused on soldiers and sailors.

Reproduced as an archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper using museum-quality pigment inks.
