A golden sky illuminates beach-goers lounging on the sandy shores of Indiana Dunes State Park in this vibrant railway travel poster. Orange and peach clouds drift across the luminous yellow sky, while families enjoy the pristine Lake Michigan coastline dotted with green dunes vegetation and small lakeside buildings.
Commissioned by the South Shore Line railway in 1927, this poster was part of an extensive advertising campaign promoting electric train service from downtown Chicago to the Indiana Dunes region. Leslie Ragan's artwork depicts the leisure appeal of the Indiana lakefront during the golden age of American railway travel, when 81-minute journeys from Chicago's Randolph Station made weekend escapes to the dunes accessible to city dwellers.
Born in Iowa in 1897, Ragan studied at the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines and the Art Institute of Chicago. His transportation illustrations became synonymous with mid-century American travel advertising, later creating celebrated work for the New York Central Railroad. The poster's bold composition and saturated palette reflect the optimistic spirit of 1920s travel promotion.
Reproduced as an archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper using gicle printing for museum-quality colour reproduction and longevity.
