A Short Empire flying boat floats on calm waters as elegantly dressed passengers board via small craft. The bold French typography announces 'Bruxelles-Londres' in red and orange above this scene of 1930s luxury air travel.
Commissioned by Imperial Airways and illustrated by Belgian artist Mark Severin in 1936, this poster promoted the airline's prestigious Brussels-London flying boat service. Severin, who also designed posters for London Underground and Shell, created this piece as part of Imperial's campaign for their fleet of 28 new Empire flying boats.
The Art Deco composition depicts the sophistication of inter-war commercial aviation, when flying represented adventure and exclusivity. The streamlined aircraft and well-dressed passengers embody the optimism of an era when air travel was becoming accessible to wealthy civilians.
A compelling piece from aviation's golden age that appeals to collectors of transport history and admirers of 1930s graphic design. Printed as an archival giclée on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper.
