French naval vessels fill Toulon's harbour while international flags signal diplomatic alliances across the Mediterranean. Hugo d'Alesi's 1901 composition depicts the French fleet at anchor, with uniformed sailors manning a launch boat in the foreground.
Commissioned as educational tableau, this work demonstrates d'Alesi's distinctive "simile-aquarelle" technique. The Romanian-born artist, established at 5 Place Pigalle in Paris, created hundreds of posters for French railway companies and institutions. His printing process required up to twenty colours, producing the rich, watercolour-like quality that set his work apart from standard lithography of the period.
Toulon served as France's principal Mediterranean naval base, projecting power across colonial territories in North Africa and Indochina. The careful arrangement of national flags represents France's naval alliances, while the circular vignette of a historical frigate links past maritime glory to the modern steel fleet of 1901.
This archival print preserves d'Alesi's intricate colour work and precise technical draughtsmanship for collectors drawn to France's Belle Époque naval heritage.
