A hula dancer in traditional ti leaf skirt and pink lei performs against a vibrant pink and purple gradient sky. Her flowing brown hair and graceful pose embody the spirit of Hawaiian hospitality that United Air Lines promised its passengers.
Designed by Stan Galli in the 1960s, part of United's golden age of travel advertising when the airline was establishing its Pacific routes to Hawaii. Galli, a founding member of the San Francisco Society of Illustrators, created this work during the height of jet-age optimism when flying to the islands was an occasion.
The composition uses a high perspective that draws the eye to the dancer's fluid movement, while the simplified background establishes a sense of tropical serenity. The bold yellow typography against the gradient sky reflects the confident modernist style that defined airline advertising of the era.
Restored from archival source as an archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper using pigment-based inks.
