A ship with the word 'EUROPE' forming its hull navigates rough seas, European flags serving as its sails. The Union Jack, French tricolour, and Dutch colours billow together against a grey sky, while gold lettering declares 'ALL OUR COLOURS TO THE MAST'.
Designed by Dutch artist Reyn Dirksen in 1950 for the Marshall Plan poster competition. From over 10,000 submissions across Europe, Dirksen's design won first prize from an international jury of twelve graphic artists. The contest challenged European artists to visualise cooperation and economic recovery in the post-war era.
The nautical metaphor depicts the essence of the Marshall Plan: European nations sailing together toward shared prosperity. The composition reduces complex geopolitics to a single comprehensible image, demonstrating the power of graphic design as political communication. This cooperation would eventually evolve into the European Union.
Printed as an archival gicle on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper, preserving the bold colours and gold typography that made this poster contest-winning design.
