A woman in western attire with red shirt and wide-brimmed hat greets a gentleman against vibrant yellow skies on an airport tarmac. Behind them, an American Airlines aircraft waits under the purple banner of 'The Southern Sunshine Route Coast to Coast'.
Commissioned by American Airlines and designed by the Einson-Freeman agency in 1940, this poster promoted the airline's southern transcontinental routes during the golden age of commercial aviation. The theatrical composition depicts the romance of air travel when flying remained an extraordinary experience.
The bold colour palette and western imagery reflect American Airlines' strategy to position their southern routes as adventures into authentic American landscapes. Einson-Freeman, based in Long Island City, New York, specialised in travel and transportation advertising for major carriers throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
Archival print reproduced on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper using museum-quality pigment inks.
