save-your-cans-barclay-ww2-1943
Save Your Cans 1943 | Barclay WW2 Home Front Poster

A helmeted US soldier crouches behind a sandy berm, feeding a water-cooled machine gun with an ammunition belt that, in the lower foreground, resolves into a chain of tin cans. A woman's arm extends from the bottom right of the composition, offering a tomato can directly to the viewer, completing the visual argument: the cans you save at home become the rounds that keep a soldier firing.

Designed by McClelland Barclay (1891–1943) for the Salvage Division of the US War Production Board in 1943, this poster belongs to the home-front salvage campaign that mobilised American civilians to recycle tin, steel and rubber for the war effort. Barclay was serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Naval Reserve at the time of the commission, designing posters from active-duty postings across both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He was killed on 18 July 1943, when USS LST-342 was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Solomon Islands. This poster, along with his Navy recruitment series, forms the body of work he produced in the final two years of his life.

The composition is among the more inventive in the WW2 home-front poster canon: the visual transition from domestic tin can to live ammunition, read in a single diagonal line from bottom right to upper left, does the rhetorical work of the campaign in one image. The instructional panel below, four numbered steps for preparing cans, gives it the practical utility of a public-information notice as well as the persuasive force of a propaganda piece.

Reproduced as a fine art archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper. A natural fit for anyone drawn to WW2 graphic design, US home-front history, or the illustration tradition of mid-century American commercial art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0994/1139/4937/files/Propaganda-SaveYourCans-McClellandBarclay-1943.jpg?v=1782033092
