paris-1924-olympics-jean-droit-poster
Paris 1924 Olympics | Jean Droit Vintage Sport Poster

Five bare-chested male figures stand in a staggered diagonal row, arms raised in the Olympic salute, their musculature rendered with the academic figure-drawing precision of Beaux-Arts training. Behind them the French tricolour fills the field in bold diagonal brushwork, terracotta orange to the left, the red, white, and blue of the flag sweeping across the right. In the lower foreground, the coat-of-arms of Paris (quartered blue and red with golden fleur-de-lis and ship) sits between crossed palm fronds. 'PARIS_1924' locks the composition at the top in heavy black slab-serif; 'JEUX OLYMPIQUES' reverses out in white across the base band.

Designed by Jean Droit (1884–1961), this was one of two official posters selected by the French Olympic Committee from 150 submissions to represent the Games of the VIIIth Olympiad. Printed by Hachard & Cie, Paris, in 1924, with 10,000 copies produced and 12,000 of the combined print run distributed internationally through National Olympic Committees, Sporting Federations, and Olympic Associations. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, holds an example. Swann Galleries catalogued it as 'Olympic Posters p. 32'; a copy sold for $6,300 at Poster Auctions International in November 2024. Droit was a painter and illustrator who had produced wartime poster commissions for France during the First World War before turning to commercial and sporting subjects in the interwar years, this poster is the work for which he is primarily known.

The salute gesture depicted, modelled on the Roman salute, was the standard Olympic opening ceremony form in 1924, discontinued later owing to its visual resemblance to the Nazi Sieg Heil. This gives the composition a historical specificity beyond the Games: the raised arms read differently now than they did to a 1924 Parisian audience, which is part of what makes it a document as well as a design.

Reproduced from a high-resolution restoration of the 1924 lithograph using archival pigment inks on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper. The flat graphic palette and bold figure work hold well at all print sizes. A natural fit for those drawn to the history of Olympic design, to interwar French graphic art, or to the tradition of the academic figure in commercial illustration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0994/1139/4937/files/Sport-Olympics-Paris1924-VIIIOlympiade-JeanDroit-1924.jpg?v=1785004568
