moulin-rouge-la-goulue-toulouse-lautrec-1891
Moulin Rouge La Goulue 1891 | Toulouse-Lautrec Poster

La Goulue, the cancan dancer whose real name was Louise Weber, holds the floor at the centre of the composition. Her white petticoats billow outward, the unprinted paper itself serving as the fabric, while her partner Valentin le Désossé looms in the foreground as a brown-grey silhouette, one hand extended toward the viewer. A row of top-hatted figures behind them dissolves into flat black against a saturated yellow ground. The red letterforms of 'Moulin Rouge' anchor the upper register in two bold lines; 'La Goulue' runs across the lower in a larger black sans-serif, framing the dancer's name as the headline event.

Toulouse-Lautrec lithographed this poster in 1891 on a commission from Charles Zidler, director of the newly established Moulin Rouge on the Boulevard de Clichy. It was his first lithograph and his first poster, printed in approximately 3,000 copies by Affiches Américaines, Charles Lévy, and pasted across Paris that autumn. The composition draws directly on the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints Lautrec had been studying for several years: flat planes of colour, strong silhouette, oblique perspective, and the performer raised to the status of public celebrity. Catalogued as Delteil 339 and Wittrock P1, the opening entry in the catalogue raisonné of his prints, it is the work that established the advertising lithograph as a legitimate art form in its own right.

Surviving original impressions are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This reproduction is printed on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper with pigment-based archival inks. The yellow ground reads warm and particulate, the black silhouettes solid, the white petticoat area clean against the paper's natural tone.

A natural fit for those drawn to the graphic culture of fin-de-siècle Paris, the Belle Époque cabaret world, or the design lineage that runs from Lautrec through Cassandre to the whole of twentieth-century poster art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0994/1139/4937/files/Music-MoulinRouge-ToulouseLautrec-LaGoulue-1891_f179492f-4ccd-498b-bc85-7e62f680ad32.jpg?v=1783449305
