This night-scene cycling composition was printed by La Lithographie Parisienne (Robin, Directeur) in Paris, c.1900–1905, as part of Michelin's campaign for its bicycle tyre range under the slogan 'Le Meilleur, Le Moins Cher', the best, the cheapest. The Bibendum character was developed by O'Galop from an earlier sketch he had made for a Munich brewery, reworked at André Michelin's suggestion after the latter noticed a stack of tyres at the 1894 Lyon Universal Exhibition and remarked that, with arms, it would look like a man.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design places the product claim and the brand mascot inside a full Belle Époque scene: the deep cobalt sky, the glowing moon, the warm domestic figures and the comic garden. It is a confident piece of illustrated advertising from the period when Paris lithographers set the international standard for the form.
